Anne has always been an artist. She decided that when she was 7. Over these many years she has followed her impulse and delved into all the mediums that she desired - amazingly they all prepared her for making giant puppets.
Giant puppets first captured Anne’s imagination in 1982 at Bread and Puppet in Vermont. She started making them on her own and umpteen experiments later she's still pursuing that joy. For Anne giant puppets represent the size of our human spirit. They are large colorful expressive pictures of our essence and deliver the magic that we dream of.
Anne has pursued many ideas when making giant puppets which inform her unique creations of today.
Anne loves using materials that are lightweight, that create options for movement, and that go gently back into the earth or can be repurposed.
Anne adores creating movement using gravity. Lately she has been designing with the wind in mind – building puppets that let the wind go through while generating wind driven movement.
Most inspiring are the collaborations she has with the beautiful puppeteers who wear the giant puppets. Each person who wears the puppets has their individual way of making the puppets move and convey their personalities. Anne considers their skills when designing giant puppets.
